UMA II English Open Judo Back to Back Ne Waza/Groundfighting Championships Results
UMA's 2nd English Open Judo Back to Back
Ne Waza Competition 24th February 2008
The UMA, started the New Year off with the now very popular Judo
Ne Waza back to back event; the event last year was mainly
dominated by the Judo teams with a few BJJ clubs pitching in on
the day. After a successful year with a number of gi and no gi
events in 2007 and with widespread publicity throughout last
year, the UMA’s first event of 2008 saw more BJJ clubs attending
the event and an increased number of Judo clubs, ready to test
their ground skills and put it all on the line.
All the usual faces from 2007 were in attendance for the event;
seasoned competitor Paul Sawyer was an ever present threat in
the under 70K and Open weight division and the highly talented
Richard Willis was ready to defend his titles from last year’s
event. The giant Leigh Hitchen brought down a strong team of
kids and seniors and Combat Base Bolton were back ready to rock
and roll.
In addition to the new faces were Judokas from Sawston JC, Hardy
Spicer, Staines JC, 3 K’s JC, Cheshire and Lakeside JC and BJJ
clubs representing Gracie Barra Doncaster and Milton Keynes and
Brasa Wales. All this talent under one roof, meant that the
event was not going to be no walk in the park, regardless of
weight group, which made up for some really exciting matches
throughout the day.
At the end of the year in ’07, the word on the street was that
due to the success of all the events last year, a bigger venue
was going to be used in 2008 to accommodate the increasing
number of participants. Although a bigger venue would cater for
the increase in numbers, many people felt that the atmosphere at
the new venue would in no way match up to the community centre
used in ’07 and as such the UMA decided to keep to the original
venue and they were not to be disappointed.
A large number of juniors entered the event and the walls
rattled with the screams of keen parents and team mates as the
little warriors battled it out for the medals and after a superb
display of technical skill and sportsmanship the juniors were
all finished, leaving the seniors to take to the mats.
Once again, the atmosphere was electric, every team mate
supporting their man out on the mats, Judo against Judo, BJJ
against BJJ and then style against style as each division threw
out some surprise match ups.
Angelo Beales from GB Milton Keynes managed to stay in line with
the unique Judo rules and won a tough division in the under 80K
and there was upset in the under 70K division when hot favourite
Paul Sawyer missed the gold, losing to Michael Troke of Hybrid
Martial Arts. Combat Base Bolton Leroy Holcroft, not content
with competing in the under 70K division, stepped up and entered
the under 75K bracket, dominated by BJJ blue belts and walked
away with the silver medal, losing to Brasa Wales’ Gareth
Dummer.
Fellow Bolton team mate Chris Webster, in his first ever
competition took the bronze medal in the under 90K division and
Leigh Hitchen took the gold in the over 100K division and lost
his Open weight crown in an epic battle of Judo v Judo, losing
to Jason Allen of Lakeside Judo Club.
Once again Richard Willis dominated his weight division and not
surprisingly took the gold in both the under 85K and the Open
weight division with an exciting fight with Stuart Austin of
Hardy Spicer Judo Club, making him the man to beat this year on
the UMA circuit.
The first event of the year again ran like clockwork, with over
100 senior entrants fighting on the day through the weight
divisions and the Open weight and masters and veterans brackets
were all hotly contested, with some amazing displays of ground
work and submissions.
Again, the Quality of the Refereeing was
excellent, the Categories and rounds ran smoothly and without
incident, and this year the UMA's new Affiliate Member Clubs
that attended also provided the UMA Officials, Time Keepers,
Score Recorders and Referee's and Fully Qualified HSE First
Aiders, again, all Fully Registered, Certified, Qualified and
highly experienced for these Championships.
The next event for the UMA is on May 18th and will be the Open
Groundfighting Championships, which will be a no gi affair; if
it’s any good as last year then do not miss this event. Get on
the mats, train your ass off and come down and represent, where
you’ll be warmly welcomed and tested to the limit.
The 19 Clubs in attendance were:
Amateur JuiJitsu Academy
Brasa BJJ Wales
Can Do Martial Arts
Combat Base Bolton
Erdington Judo Club
Fighting Fit Gym
Gracie Barra BJJ Milton Keynes
Gracie Barra BJJ Doncaster
Hardy Spicer Judo Club
Hybrid Martial Arts
3 K's Judo Club
Kita Ogawa Martial Arts
Lakeside Judo Club
Matsumachi Judo Club
MFF Fighters

Letter of Thanks to the UMA
from The President of the Philippine Judo Federation
This email was
sent to the UMA after we were consulted and asked by the
President of the Philippine Judo Federation himself for
permission to use the UMA Judo Ne Waza/Groundfighting Rules
for they're own Championships.
Thanks so much!
There are lots of Judokas here that are crazy with
Ne-Waza like me.
Some are also
having their Ne-Waza competitions. These guys need to
base the rules from a very credible source like you.
Thanks so much for
the assistance.

U.M.A. Championship Tournaments and Venue
for 2008
Based on the fantastic feedback from all the
Championships held in 2007, the U.M.A. have decided not to expand or move to a
bigger venue for 2008, also, we feel that by keeping the Championships
relatively small and compact and by limiting the Competitor entry numbers to a
maximum of 135 Competitors and by using a friendly and smaller venue with two
matted areas to compete on etc, gives everyone a great chance of competing
without the stresses and added pressures of the other and much larger National
Open Championships that are current in the UK run and organised by other UK
Associations etc. Also we don't want to lose that personal touch we feel we give
to everyone, the many, many comments on how the Open Championships are
professionally run and how friendly everyone are etc, has actually become our
signature, we are known as the Competitive but friendly Open Championships,
which we feel was achieved through being non political and caring about what we
do. However, we will have to eventually move to a bigger venue when the time
comes and we are exceeding our own limits then we will do that, but at this
moment in time, we here at the U.M.A. feel that its is not time just yet, so we
will continue to organise and run our Open Championships at the Carver Road
Community Centre in Burton on Trent, Staffordshire.
We have also decided to cut the number of Open
Championships available, so now for 2008, we will run two Judo related Events,
two Karate related Events, two Groundfighting related Events and one Submission
Grappling related Event, so we still have a good broad range of martial arts
related events in representation for 2008.

U.M.A. English Open Junior
Karate Championships
Sunday 11th November 2007
Photo's Courtesy of
England Karate Kan
The First U.M.A.
English Open Junior Karate Championships were a great success,
although the Venue was changed a few Days before, due to
the Competitor Entries being under 100 Competitors, the
Championships was still a fantastic success, and the U.M.A.
would like to thank everyone for they're support and participation of these New and Prestigious Open Junior Karate
Championships, and look forward to seeing you all again soon.
The U.M.A. would like to thank all the Coach's,
Competitors, Referee's, Judges, Officials, Spectators and Supporters alike
for making the Championship a resounding success, it was a great
day, the enthusiasm of all the Competitors and Coaches lifted
the roof of at the Community Centre, the atmosphere was great
and electric to say the least with some very exciting and close
decisions in all the Individual and Team Kata and Kumite Events,
the standard of the Competitors was excellent, with many major
Junior Players too.
We also had to split
one Category and create two Pools as it was massively over subscribed,
and there were 21 from the total of 24 Categories
which we ran with on the Day of The Championships, so although the
competitor numbered under 100, the Championships were still a
great success and we still ran 21 Categories in total on Two
Competition Areas throughout the Day.
Yet again, we finished and
closed the Championships a little before 4.30pm, so a Big Thankyou to all the Competitors, Coach's,
Spectators, Table Officials and Referee's and Judges for getting
here on time, registering in on time etc, and for
they're help in making the Championships run smooth and on time yet again.
Congratulations to all of the New
U.M.A. British Open Individual and Team Kata and Kumite Champions, Gold
Medallists and Title Holders for 2007 who won they're respective
Kata and Kumite Categories at the Championships, and well done to everyone
who took part, without you all, it would not have been the
great success it was.

U.M.A. British Open Amateur
Submission Grappling Championships
Sunday 7th October 2007

The First U.M.A. British Open Amateur
Submission Grappling Championships turned out to be another great
and successful Championship Tournament, with Clubs old and new
attending the Championships, the heat was turned up a little
higher due to the exceptional quality of the Fighters Competing
for Honours on the day.
The problem is, that
there were so many good fights, it would take a whole website to
list them all, so we'll have to limit the details etc, what with
a great mix of Freestyle, Submission Grapplers, Shooftfighters,
M.M.A. Fighters, Brazilian, Gracie and Japanese JuiJitsu and
Judo Players, this was a real mixed bag of Top Quality Grapplers
doing there stuff.
However, there is a
up and coming Grappler who won both his Weight Categories he
entered; U95kg and the Open Weight Category, who will get yet
another mention for such a great feat, and that is Richard
Willis from Stone's Fighting Fit Gym, its obvious being selected
for the G.B. F.I.L.A. Squad and competing in the World
Championships in Turkey has helped gain him a lot of experience,
as he fought and won over all his fights in both Categories
against what must be said was excellent and tough opposition, as
explained earlier, there was not one bad match/fight all day at
the Championships from everyone who competed, the skill levels
of all the fighters was excellent, so Richard put on an
exceptional performance to say the least to win Both Categories,
so well done again.
However, we here at
the U.M.A. feel that there was only one downfall though, there
wasn't enough Under 16/Junior Grapplers, and there was not one
Adult Woman Grappler who entered, this was and is a
disappointing situation, hopefully over the years with the top
quality Tournaments and Championships starting to get more and
better exposure here in the UK, we must all try and address this
problem and get more Juniors and Women involved and training in
the sport, especially if we want the Submission Grappling and
Groundfighting scene to grow and succeed here in the UK, so we
here at the U.M.A. will try and do our best to help and support
this issue in anyway we can.
Again, we finished and
closed the Championships a little before 4.00pm, better than on time, yet
again, so a Big Thankyou to all the Competitors, Coach's,
Spectators, Table Officials and First Aid Officials for getting
here on time, registering an weighing in on time etc, and for
they're help in making the Championships run smooth and on time yet again.
Rather than name all
the Fighters, especially as there were just under 60 Competitors
in total on the day, and as there wasn't one bad or boring match
whatsoever, we feel it would be better to give all the Clubs who
attended a mention as a thankyou to them all for they're support
of the Championships, and especially to the Competitors who all
gave 110%, so here we go, a great big thankyou and well done

U.M.A. UK Open High Kneeling
Judo Ne Waza/Groundfighting Championships
Sunday 19th August 2007
Yet again, another great,
enjoyable, friendly and successful day, all without
incident yet again, and all this with lots of fantastic fights,
the turn out for the Championships was a little under 70
competitors, with August being the main holiday month, it was
still an excellent turnout and the standard of the Players and
fights were yet again excellent to say the least, hence there
were a lot of excellent fights yet again, it was obvious that
the standard of the Players old and new to our Championships so
far this year and the fights etc, at our Championships, is
getting better, so well done to everyone of the Players.
Again, and with all the 17
Weight Categories that were in play, we still finished and
closed the Championships before 4.00pm, better than on time, yet
again, so a Big, Big Thankyou to all the Competitors, Coach's,
Spectators, Table Officials and First Aid Officials who helped
run and make the Championships the success they were yet again.
And a Big Thankyou to our
Special Guest Referee; Sensei Leigh Hitchen from J16 and
Sandbach Judo Club for a great Job Well Done for Refereeing some
of the Junior and Cadet Weight Categories.
Senior Player (16 years
old and over) of the Day was Paul Sawyer from Matsumachi
Judo Club in Bournemouth, he is proving to be a major force with
fantastic results at or past Championships, however, Paul
exceeded his previous results with a 3rd Place Bronze in the
Male 19 and over U75kg, a 3rd Place Bronze in the Male 19 and
over Open Weight and finally, a Championship 1st Place Win and
Gold in the Masters Open Weight Category, and yet he's still a
young 45 year old... Well done Paul, I think we'll all have a
little of what you've got, so, how many Shredded Wheat do you
eat anyway...( three? ).
Junior Player (15 years
old and under) of the Day goes to 10 year old Eric Ham from
Glossop Judo Club in Derbyshire, Winning both his own Weight
Category; the Peewee Boys 10 years old and below, Under 30kg and
Peewee Boys 10 years old and below, Open Weight, this young
Player is one to watch for sure...
And well done to Richard
Willis, from Fighting Fit in Stone, Staffordshire who took a 2nd
Place Silver Medal in the Male 19 years old and over U95kg and a
1st Place Win in the Male 19 years old and over Open Weight
Category. Richard recently fought his way on the F.I.L.A.
grappling mat the hard way to prove his worth, and has just been
picked for the Great Britain F.I.L.A. Grappling Squad, and he
will be Fighting and Representing Great Britain in Turkey in
September, Good Luck from everyone here at the U.M.A.

U.M.A. British Open Kata Championships
Sunday March 4th 2007

Vale Karate
The First UMA British Open Kata Championships were an
overwhelming success, with Competitors from England, Scotland and
Wales, hence making these Prestigious Championships a truly
British affair.
The UMA would like to thank all the Coach's,
Competitors, Judges, Officials, Spectators and Supporters alike
for making the Championship a resounding success.
Infact due to the quantity of
competitor entries received for the Championships we had to split
one Category and create a completely New Category prior to the
Championships as it was massively over subscribed, hence
instead of the original 18 Categories, we now have 19 categories
overall of which we ran with on the Day of The Championships.
Congratulations to all of the New
UMA British Open Individual and Team Kata Champions, Gold
Medallists and Title Holders for 2007 who won they're respective
Kata Categories at the Championships, and well done to everyone
who took part, without you all, it would not have been the
success it was.
And Congratulations to Vale Karate
Club for Winning the "UMA British Open Kata Championship Club Trophy
Award" for gaining the most
1st, 2nd and 3rd place points on the Day, with San Gai Karate Club coming in
a close second, Chase Wado Kai and Liphook Karate Club coming in together joint
third,
so well done and congratulations to you all.
We must also express our
gratitude and sincere thanks to everyone who took part in these
our first Prestigious British Open Kata Championships, and
thankyou to everyone for getting to the venue, registering an
being ready on time, as we started the Championships on time, and

English Karate Federation
(New N.G.B. for Karate)
There is now yet
another New National Governing Body for Karate that has been
formed called the E.K.F. (English Karate Federation).

KARATE ENGLAND GOES
BUST - 31st Jan 2007
This is the
Official Letter from Karate England N.G.B. to its Members.
To All Karate England
Members
I am writing on behalf of the Board to update you on the latest
position.
At our meeting on the 4th January, we discussed with Sport England
a number of different options we might explore to help us secure a
stable financial position going forward. One of the options open
to us was entering into a Corporate Voluntary Agreement (CVA) with
Karate England’s creditors. Sport England had told us that one of
the precursors to resuming funding was that we devise a recovery
plan which would have the effect of creating a zero balance on
Karate England’s finances.
The Board sought advice on the CVA from three insolvency companies
and this highlighted the risk of entering into a CVA which would
quite likely fail due to the lack of certainty regarding income,
taking in to account the Sport England position on financial input
into a CVA and with Sport England funding not being reinstated. In
addition, it is clear that members are not prepared to commit
further registrations in the current situation.
We therefore believed the only viable option was that we inform
all member associations, creditors and Sport England that Karate
England 2005 Ltd should cease to trade and we notified Sport
England of this decision on Friday and informed them that we would
make a public announcement after the weekend . This is the course
we have been advised to follow and we have done this with great
reluctance.
We continue to recognise the importance and need for a National
Governing Body for Karate and are proposing a new approach to
Sport England which we believe could meet the need of Karate in
the future, meet Sport England requirements and command broad
support from the Karate family in England.
We believe this is best way forward and we will provide further
details in the next few days and hope to have the opportunity to
discuss the issues in full on 18 February.
Yours sincerely,
Bob Poynton
Karate England Company Secretary
Note:
Question:
So, how does this effect all the Members and Clubs here at the
U.M.A...?
Answer: None
whatsoever, fortunately for us all here at the U.M.A., even though
Karate England was only the National Governing Body for Sport
Karate in the U.K. this was only one of the National Governing
Bodies that we the U.M.A. were actually members of, we are lucky
enough to be safe and sound in the knowledge that the U.M.A. are
Affiliated to and Members of N.A.K.M.A.S. N.G.B. (National
Association of Karate & Martial Arts Schools), the U.K.'s only
National Governing Body for Martial Arts and Karate here in the
U.K.
