Refereeing

Courses are run throughout the year for our Various National Open Championships such as Karate, Judo, Ne Waza, Grappling and Groundfighting.

Qualifications are for U.M.A. National Referee, U.M.A. National Judge, U.M.A Association and Affiliate recognised Referee and U.M.A Association and Affiliate
recognised Judge. We also have qualifications for Table Officials, who have to understand the Administration and Referees and Judges signals and the scoring system.

We will be happy to arrange a Referee Course in your area for the Qualification of your Club and/or Association Members.

Competitors, Coach's, Instructors and Squad members etc, are invited on all the U.M.A. Referee Courses so they may have a greater understanding of the rules and regulations etc.

How do I become a U.M.A. Qualified and Certified Referee or Judge?
You attend Referee courses organised by the U.M.A Chief Referee. These include a detailed study of the current rules, regulations and practice sessions on the practical side of Refereeing and Judging procedures. These are held once a year for each of the U.M.A. Open Championship Events for; Karate, Judo, Ne Waza, Grappling and Groundfighting.

Revalidation for existing U.M.A. Qualified Referee's and Judges; Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3. (All Current Level 1,2 and 3 Referee's must attend for re-validation)

Level 1 U.M.A. Certified Referee and/or Judge: (1st year Referee/Judge) are Newly Qualified Referee's, but have no experience Officiating and/or Refereeing at Championship Events, hence, they will get the chance to either Assist a Judge or Referee under the full supervision and guidance of a Fully Qualified and Experienced Level 3 Referee and/or Judge in the first 12 months of being Certified.

Level 2 U.M.A. Certified and Qualified Referee and/or Judge: (Mat Referee) are Qualifications for Referee's and Judges who have had 12 to under 24 months experience of Officiating, Refereeing and Judging, both with and without the supervision of a Level 3 Qualified Referee and/or Judge at Championship Events.

Level 3 U.M.A. Certified and Qualified Referee and Judge: (Area Referee) is a Certified Qualification for Referee's and Judges who have had 24+ months experience of Officiating and Refereeing and/or Judging without supervision, and have also supervised both Level 1 and 2 Referee's at Championship Events.

What does the Referee's Course consist of?

There are three main core modules:

Theory: Rules, Regulations, Administration, Scorekeeping (Use of the U.M.A. Manual and Electronic Score Boards), Score Recording, and Timekeeping.

Practical: Real Time Scenarios, Scorekeeping, Score Recording and Timekeeping, Examples and Role Play as a Referee whilst conducting a Contest whilst Players are in contest.

Exam: Multiple Choice Test Paper.

What is the age limit?
You must be 16 years old and over.

Do you have to have competed in competition to qualify?
No, although you will appreciate the competitors views and frustrations better, there is no reason why a non-competitor should not qualify as a Referee or a Judge.

Do I have to pass an exam?
Only if you want to become an active Referee and/or Judge. At the end of the course you must pass the Exam paper with a minimum score of 85% to qualify. The Courses are also open to Coaches and Competitors that want a better understanding of the rules as and when they change.

What will it cost?
Referee Candidate Registration Fee:
U.M.A. Members and Affiliates: Free
Non Members and Non Affiliates: £15 per Candidate

Note: Integrated Score Keeper, Score Recorder and Timekeeper Course: Free to anyone who may wish to attend and learn how to operate the Manual and Electronic Score Boards, Score Recording, Administration and Timekeeping etc.
